Description

This magnificent and true pair of 19th-century candelabra stands as a superb testament to the artistry and refined aesthetic of the Napoleon III period (1852-1870). These exceptional pieces are not merely objects of illumination; they are a profound fusion of sculpture, history, and decorative art, designed to evoke the grandeur of a bygone era. They represent a high point in the 19th-century European decorative arts, combining the brilliance of gilt bronze (ormolu) with the rich depth of patinated bronze and the luxurious texture of malachite.

The design is a sophisticated and highly symbolic blend of classical motifs and symmetrical elegance. Each candelabrum is raised on a square green malachite base with concave corners, a luxurious and highly prized material known for its striking, verdant color and mesmerizing concentric patterns. Malachite was frequently employed in the most prestigious commissions of the 19th century, particularly within the orbit of the Russian Imperial court, symbolizing luxury and connection to the vast mineral wealth of the Ural Mountains. The malachite base is further enhanced by a finely chased ormolu socle, which features a detailed foliate wrap-around band and a fluted design.

Rising from this plinth, a charming patinated bronze cherub, or putto, serves as the central sculptural element. The cherub is rendered with remarkable skill, draped in a wonderfully executed flowing fabric that appears to cling to the figure with natural grace. Putti, in the Neoclassical context, are often associated with the gods, embodying the spirit of classical antiquity. Each cherub holds aloft a beautifully arranged structure of six scrolling arms, masterfully cast in a contrasting gilt bronze. These arms, intricately detailed with delicate berries and fluted candle cups, radiate outwards to create a harmonious and balanced display. The candelabra are topped with an ornate finial, echoing the overall decorative splendor.

The quality of the casting and the meticulous detail of the chasing are indicative of a top-tier Parisian or European workshop of the period. The purposeful juxtaposition of the brilliant, reflective gilt bronze against the deep, matte patinated bronze creates a powerful visual dynamic, highlighting the sculptural details and adding a sense of depth and contrast. The use of mercury gilding (ormolu), a difficult and costly process, resulted in a lustrous, durable finish that has maintained its brilliance for over a century.

These candelabra are not merely functional objects; they are exquisite works of art that would have originally graced a grand salon, a mantelpiece, or a formal dining room. They perfectly embody the opulence and decorative spirit of the Napoleon III period and would serve as a commanding and elegant statement piece in any collection.
