Description

This is an exceptional and authentic mantel clock, a superb example of a 19th-century Boulle revival piece. The clock is signed “CLOUZIER À PARIS,” a signature that belongs to a master horologist working in the French capital during a period of great artistic revival. The original Boulle style, which reached its zenith in the late 17th and early 18th centuries under the master craftsman André-Charles Boulle, saw a dramatic resurgence in popularity during the Second Empire (1852-1870). This clock is a testament to the renewed appreciation for its opulent and intricate craftsmanship, perfectly blending historical reference with contemporary technical excellence.

The clock’s case is a masterpiece of Boulle marquetry, with a rich, dark background (typically tortoiseshell or ebonized wood) that is exquisitely inlaid with intricate brass scrolls and foliage. This meticulous technique creates a stunning visual effect that radiates luxury and historical prestige. The case is further embellished with a series of finely cast and chased gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts, including a prominent finial that appears to be an eagle or rooster-a frequent symbol of French authority and royalty. The flowing mounts and decorative columns give the clock a sense of architectural grandeur. The clock’s highly ornate design, with its serpentine lines and decorative elements, is a deliberate homage to the rich artistic traditions of the Louis XIV and Louis XV periods.

The large dial features a circular white enamel chapter ring with Roman numerals, which provides a clear contrast to the ornate central bronze plate. The movement within, a hallmark of a high-quality Parisian workshop, would be an eight-day mechanism with a silk suspension, a standard of excellence for the period. It would strike the hour and half-hour on a bell, a feature valued for its clear, resonant sound.

This clock is a rare and highly desirable work of art. It combines the timeless artistry of Boulle with the technical excellence and refined taste of a 19th-century master. It is not merely a timepiece but a significant piece of French decorative arts history that would be a commanding addition to any collection.
