Description

This is a superb and authentic Louis XVI period portico clock, an iconic form that perfectly embodies the architectural classicism and refined elegance of the late 18th century. The style, which flourished during the reign of King Louis XVI (1774-1792), marked a significant departure from the asymmetrical whimsy of the preceding Rococo era. The tastes of the court and the Parisian elite turned toward the newfound archaeological discoveries of Pompeii and Herculaneum, leading to a profound fascination with Greco-Roman antiquity. The resulting style emphasized symmetry, straight lines, and motifs drawn directly from classical art and architecture.

The clock is a masterful composition of materials, constructed from delicate alabaster and adorned with a magnificent array of finely chiseled and gilded bronze ornamentation (ormolu). The architectural form is defined by two slender columns supporting a frieze and entablature. The ornamentation is exceptionally rich and detailed, including a central trophy of music and the arts, gracefully suspended beneath the dial, which is further embellished with frets of ropes, pearls, and heart rays. The columns are decorated with oak leaves, acanthus, and bows of ribbons.

A particularly rare and exquisite feature of this clock is the pair of white and blue biscuit medallions, which are a direct homage to the highly fashionable and coveted works of Josiah Wedgwood. These medallions, depicting a charming antique scene, were a sophisticated and fashionable choice, demonstrating the owner’s knowledge of both classical history and contemporary art. The white enamel dial clearly indicates the hours and minutes in elegant Arabic numerals, a style that gained popularity for its clarity and legibility during this period. The original movement retains its wire suspension and is a testament to the high-quality horological craftsmanship of the late 18th century.

This piece is a magnificent and rare example of the Louis XVI style at its best, combining architectural rigor with delicate ornamentation and a superb quality of materials. It is a work of art that beautifully represents the intellectual and aesthetic sensibilities of its time.Louis XVI period.
