Description

This mantel clock represents the stylistic transition between the late French Empire period (circa 1800–1830) and the emerging Second Empire style (mid-19th century). During this transitional era, decorative arts retained the classical themes and disciplined forms of the Empire style while gradually embracing more eclectic and ornate details that would define the later Napoleon III period.

The figure of a scholar or poet, as depicted here in gilt bronze, reflects the early 19th-century fascination with classical antiquity and the humanistic values associated with learning, literature, and the arts. The inscriptions on the book-Les Géorgiques (Virgil’s Georgics) and L’Enéide (Virgil’s Aeneid)-underscore the period’s reverence for classical literature and education, highlighting the intellectual aspirations of the clock’s original owners.

Malachite, used extensively for the base, was a luxury material prized during the 19th century for its rich color and exotic appeal, symbolizing wealth and refined taste. Gilt-bronze mounts (ormolu) enhanced these prestigious objects with intricate detail and a radiant finish, emblematic of French craftsmanship excellence.

Overall, this clock is a testament to the evolving artistic sensibilities of 19th-century France, combining neoclassical restraint and symbolism with the sumptuous materials and elaborate decoration that would become prominent during the Second Empire. It reflects both the cultural values and the material opulence sought by the elite in this vibrant period of French decorative arts.

The clock is in excellent and perfect working condition. In addition, it has been cleaned and maintained by a professional watchmaker specializing in museum maintenance.
