Description

A highly impressive French gilt bronze cartel wall clock, designed in the grand Louis XV and Louis XVI revival taste and distinguished by its richly architectural case, sculptural ormolu decoration, and finely detailed dial. The clock is centred by a large gilt bronze dial with individual enamel Roman numeral cartouches, finely formed hands, twin winding apertures, and a richly chased centre. The dial is set within a glazed architectural case and framed by elaborate gilt bronze borders, giving the piece a strong and luxurious decorative presence.

The case is profusely cast and chased with scrolling acanthus, rocaille ornament, classical masks, floral garlands, pierced panels, shell motifs, and architectural pilasters. The upper crest is surmounted by seated classical figures flanking an ornamental cartouche, while the lower section descends into a deeply modelled openwork apron with masks, scrolls, and a pendant finial. The entire composition is conceived as a sculptural wall object, combining the function of a clock with the richness of a decorative bronze.

The design reflects the French tradition of the cartel clock, a form that became especially fashionable in the 18th century for important interiors. Cartel clocks were often mounted directly on the wall and were prized for their elaborate cases, which allowed bronze founders to display exceptional skill in casting, chasing, and gilding. Their dramatic silhouettes, elaborate mounts, and richly ornamented surfaces made them ideal focal points for salons, reception rooms, libraries, and formal galleries.

This example combines the movement and exuberance of the Rococo style with the more architectural and classical details associated with later Neoclassical taste. The scrolling side ornaments, shell forms, and fluid curves recall the Louis XV period, while the symmetrical structure, pilasters, masks, and classical figural crest reflect the influence of Louis XVI design. This blending of styles was particularly admired in the 19th century, when French craftsmen revived earlier royal decorative traditions for collectors and grand interiors.

The quality of the gilt bronze decoration gives the clock a particularly opulent appearance. The pierced lower apron, sculptural crest, enamel numeral cartouches, and finely chased dial centre create depth, movement, and visual richness from every angle. The clock was intended not merely as a practical timepiece, but as a statement of refinement, craftsmanship, and historical taste.

This cartel clock presents as a grand and highly decorative French wall clock with exceptional visual impact. Its richly gilded case, architectural form, enamel cartouche dial, sculptural figural crest, and elaborate ormolu mounts make it a striking addition to a collection of antique clocks, French decorative arts, or an important period interior. It would display beautifully in a professional dealer’s gallery, formal salon, or refined collector setting.
