Description

This magnificent pair of French malachite and gilt bronze vases is a superb example of the opulent decorative arts of the Napoleon III period, dating from around 1850–1870.

Each vase is of impressive height and takes the form of a tall, slightly tapering urn with a gently flared rim. The body is entirely veneered in rich, deep green malachite, whose natural swirling patterns and intense colour create a dramatic and luxurious surface. The malachite is framed by elaborate gilt bronze mounts that follow the architectural lines of the vase. These mounts include finely chased acanthus scrolls, floral rosettes, and classical foliate motifs that rise gracefully from the base to the shoulder.

At the upper part, two elegant female caryatid figures in gilt bronze support the rim, their arms raised in a classic pose. The lower section features bold, scrolling gilt bronze feet that terminate in acanthus leaves, giving the vases a strong architectural presence while maintaining a sense of lightness and movement.

The combination of the vivid green malachite with the warm, luminous gilt bronze reflects the Napoleon III love of rich colour contrasts and revivalist ornament. While the overall form draws inspiration from 18th-century Louis XVI models, the scale, the exuberance of the mounts, and the quality of the malachite veneer are unmistakably characteristic of mid-19th-century Second Empire taste.

Such monumental vases were highly prized in grand Parisian apartments and châteaux. They were often placed on consoles or pedestals in salons, galleries, or formal rooms, where they served as important decorative statements rather than mere containers. The use of malachite, a rare and expensive stone, emphasised the wealth and refined taste of their original owners.

When displayed together, this pair creates a powerful symmetrical effect. The deep green malachite bodies glow with intensity, while the gilt bronze mounts catch the light with quiet brilliance. Their imposing height and sculptural quality make them ideal as focal points in any Neoclassical or historicist interior.

This pair represents the pinnacle of 19th-century French luxury craftsmanship, where technical mastery in stone veneering and bronze casting meets lavish revivalist design. Their exceptional quality and striking visual impact make them a highly desirable addition to any serious collection of Napoleon III decorative arts.
