Description

This elegant tall case clock, or régulateur de parquet, is a fine and sophisticated example of French Neoclassical furniture from the late 18th to early 19th century, most likely dating to the Louis XVI or early Empire period. Crafted with exceptional care, it showcases the refined taste for clean lines, geometric precision, and harmonious materials that defined the era.

The clock stands on a tall, tapering body executed in beautiful mahogany with a delicate herringbone (chevron) veneer pattern that adds subtle visual rhythm and warmth to the surface. At the top, the circular dial is housed in a rounded head with a rich, dark wood finish and is fitted with a white enamel face displaying Roman numerals and delicate gilt hands. The exposed movement with visible gears behind the dial adds a technical charm typical of precision regulator clocks.

This clock is equipped with several rare and delightful complications that elevate it far beyond a standard timepiece. It indicates seconds, minutes, and hours, along with the month displayed on a dedicated aperture. Additionally, it incorporates a music box with eight different tunes. Most charmingly, the music box is programmed to play automatically at 7:00 in the morning and 19:00 in the evening every day. Furthermore, the clock strikes the quarters every 15 minutes with a gentle chime on its bells.

Below the dial, a rectangular brass panel with a small door provides access to the pendulum or winding mechanism, while further down an oval gilt bronze medallion features a classical trophy or symbolic motif, enhancing the piece’s architectural dignity. The entire structure rests on a solid rectangular base, maintaining perfect proportions from top to bottom.

Such régulateurs were highly valued in French interiors for their accuracy and understated elegance. They were often placed in libraries, studies, or formal salons where precise timekeeping combined with musical pleasure created a cultivated atmosphere. The combination of warm mahogany veneer, crisp gilt bronze accents, and the clean Neoclassical silhouette reflects the shift away from Rococo ornamentation toward symmetry, restraint, and classical inspiration that characterized the period.

Mechanically, the clock has been professionally serviced and remains in excellent working condition, offering both dependable timekeeping and the gentle presence of a finely crafted piece of furniture. The music box functions perfectly, and the automatic activation at 7:00 and 19:00 adds a delightful daily ritual to the experience.

When standing in a room, this tall clock commands quiet attention with its slender, tapering form and rich wood tones. The herringbone pattern catches the light softly, while the gilt details provide just the right touch of refinement. The soft chime every quarter hour and the melodic tunes at morning and evening hours bring a living, harmonious rhythm to the space.

This is a sophisticated and authentic example of late 18th/early 19th century French horological furniture, enhanced with rare musical and calendar complications. Its understated beauty, technical ingenuity, and excellent proportions make it a truly special addition to any Neoclassical interior or serious collection.
