Description

This magnificent French Empire centre table is a superb example of the highest quality Neoclassical furniture produced in Paris during the early 19th century, circa 1810–1820.

The table features a large circular top in rich green malachite with a beautiful natural swirling pattern. The edge is framed by a finely chased gilt bronze gallery with a repeating anthemion and laurel motif. Below the top runs a heavy gilt bronze swag of laurel leaves and berries, a classic Empire symbol of victory and eternal glory.

The support is particularly dramatic and sculptural: four powerful gilt bronze winged sphinxes (or griffins) crouch on the corners of the base, their bodies turned outward and their wings raised. These mythical creatures add both strength and poetic symbolism to the piece. The lower part consists of a circular platform in rich mahogany with gilt bronze stringing and a stepped base, creating a strong architectural foundation.

The combination of the deep green malachite top, the warm mahogany, and the luminous gilt bronze sphinxes creates a rich and harmonious visual effect that is quintessentially Empire. The quality of the casting, chasing, and gilding is of the highest level, typical of the best Parisian workshops of the period.

This centre table perfectly embodies the spirit of the Empire under Napoleon Bonaparte. After the Revolution, French designers deliberately returned to the grandeur of ancient Rome and Greece. Mythical creatures such as sphinxes, classical laurel motifs, and noble materials like malachite were used to express imperial power, order, permanence, and refined taste. Such grand tables were commissioned for the salons and galleries of palaces, ministries, and elegant private residences, where they served as important focal points for displaying clocks, candelabra, or fine porcelain.

When placed in a room, this table creates an immediate impression of dignity and opulence. The malachite top glows with depth, the gilt bronze sphinxes catch the light with quiet brilliance, and the mahogany base adds warmth and richness. Its perfect proportions and sculptural quality make it an ideal centrepiece in any Neoclassical interior.

This centre table represents the pinnacle of French Empire furniture design, where technical mastery in bronze casting and stone veneering meets flawless classical proportion and symbolic refinement. Its exceptional quality and pure stylistic coherence make it a highly desirable addition to any serious collection of early 19th-century French decorative arts.
