Description

This elegant French commode is a beautiful example of the Louis XV Rococo revival style, created during the Napoleon III period, circa 1850–1870.

The commode is veneered in richly figured mahogany with a warm, deep tone and a pronounced “flame” grain that catches the light beautifully. It follows the classic bombé (curved) form with a serpentine front and sides. The top is crowned with a thick red marble slab (likely griotte or rouge royal), adding richness and contrast to the warm wood.

The front is divided into two long drawers, each fitted with elaborate gilt bronze handles and keyhole escutcheons in the full rococo taste — featuring scrolling acanthus leaves, rocaille shells, and floral motifs. The corners and legs are richly mounted with gilt bronze chutes (corner mounts) and sabots (feet) decorated with acanthus leaves and volutes. The apron carries a prominent central gilt bronze mount with symmetrical scrolling foliage, completing the opulent decoration.

This commode perfectly reflects the romantic revival spirit of the Second Empire. While inspired by the playful asymmetry and naturalistic forms of the Louis XV period under King Louis XV, it is executed with the larger scale, deeper carving, richer gilding, and higher technical finish characteristic of mid-19th-century Parisian workshops. Such pieces were highly sought after by the new wealthy bourgeoisie and aristocracy who wished to evoke the elegance of the Ancien Régime while enjoying contemporary luxury.

When placed in a salon, boudoir, or bedroom, this commode offers both practical storage and a strong decorative presence. The warm mahogany glows softly, the gilt bronze mounts shimmer with light, and the curved lines give the piece a graceful, feminine character.

This is a fine and authentic example of Napoleon III ébénisterie, where technical mastery meets historical revival and refined luxury. Its harmonious proportions, high-quality materials, and fine ormolu mounts make it a highly desirable addition to any serious collection of 19th-century French furniture.
