Description

This is a superb and authentic antique French table or mantel clock from the Louis XVI period (1774-1792), a time defined by a return to classical ideals of symmetry, order, and noble simplicity. This era saw a fascination with Greco-Roman antiquity, which is elegantly reflected in the sculptural and architectural elements of this piece. The clock is a testament to the exceptional craftsmanship of Jean-Baptiste Baillon III (d. 1772), one of the most celebrated and innovative clockmakers of his day. Known as “the richest watchmaker in Europe,” Baillon’s clientele included the French and Spanish royal families, and his work is held in the world’s most prestigious collections, including the Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

This unique clock’s case is a masterpiece of fine art, cast in expertly chased and mercury-gilded bronze. The sculptural group, a common and highly valued feature of clocks from this period, is an allegory of learning and study. A tall lady, a personification of knowledge or wisdom, is elegantly posed next to the clock, holding a book and a feather pen. She is accompanied by a child, draped in the Antique style, who stands on a stack of books and holds a paper scroll. These figures are a direct expression of the Enlightenment ideals of education and human reason, which were central to the intellectual climate of the Louis XVI era.

The clock is mounted on a beautiful white marble base, which rests on four small, finely chased spinning feet. The clock’s dial features both outer Arabic and inner Roman numerals, a clear sign of its high quality and the desire for both traditional and modern legibility. The fine pair of pierced gilt brass hands for the hours and minutes further underscores the meticulous attention to detail. The mechanism is a work of horological genius, a hallmark of Baillon’s reputation.

This authentic antique clock is not merely a timepiece but a piece of history and a work of fine art, combining the technical mastery of a legendary horologist with the refined aesthetic of the late 18th century. It is a rare and highly desirable example of the finest French decorative arts.
