Description

This is a truly exceptional and authentic mantel clock, a superb example of the rich decorative arts that flourished in France from the late Louis XIV to the Régence period (circa 1715-1730). This era was defined by a profound sense of opulence and artistic mastery, with the Rococo style beginning to emerge from the more rigid forms of the Baroque. The clock is signed “JOSUE PANIER À PARIS,” a signature that belongs to a master clockmaker who was active in Paris and whose work is a celebrated example of high-end horology from this time.

The clock’s case is a masterpiece of craftsmanship, executed in the highly prized Boulle marquetry technique. This meticulous process, perfected by the master craftsman André-Charles Boulle, involved a complex inlay of materials to create intricate patterns. The dark, lustrous surface (typically tortoiseshell or ebonized wood) is exquisitely inlaid with finely cut brass, creating a stunning visual effect of intricate arabesques, scrolling foliage, and delicate strapwork.

The case is further embellished with a series of finely cast and chased gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts, a hallmark of the finest Parisian artistry. These mounts frame the clock face and adorn the case with exuberant, scrolling Rococo elements, adding a sense of three-dimensional depth and grandeur. The lavish finial atop the clock, a beautifully sculpted figure of a cherub-like figure or a classical god, adds to its architectural presence and provides a sense of dynamism to the composition.

The clock face is a large, elegant dial with individual white enamel cartouches bearing crisp Roman numerals, set on a gilded bronze ground. This dial configuration, known as “pièces rapportées,” was a stylish feature of the period, providing clear legibility against the richly detailed face. The movement within, a testament to the skill of a master like Josue Panier, would have been of the highest quality, likely featuring a high-quality escapement and striking the hour and half-hour on a bell.

This magnificent clock is a rare and highly collectible work of art. Its combination of exceptional Boulle marquetry, superb bronze work, and the recognized signature of a Parisian master makes it a significant and beautiful example of the finest French decorative arts from the 18th century. It stands not only as a functional timepiece but as a beautiful monument to the opulent and commanding style of its era.
