Description

This elegant French Empire armchair is a fine and characteristic example of the pure Neoclassical furniture produced in Paris during the early 19th century, circa 1810–1820.

The chair is executed in rich, beautifully figured mahogany with a warm, deep polish. Its design is strictly architectural: the curved backrest is supported by a central splat, while the open arms terminate in finely chased gilt bronze mounts depicting winged female heads (probably Victories or classical genii). Matching gilt bronze ornaments with anthemion motifs adorn the front of the armrests. The seat is upholstered in rich teal-green leather and finished with a single row of gilt brass studs, adding a crisp decorative detail.

The four tapering legs are square in section, ending in elegant gilt bronze sabots shaped as lion paws — a classic Empire motif symbolising strength and imperial power. The overall proportions are balanced and restrained, with clean lines and minimal ornamentation that emphasise the beauty of the mahogany and the quality of the gilt bronze details.

This armchair perfectly embodies the spirit of the Empire under Napoleon Bonaparte. After the playful curves of the Louis XVI style and the chaos of the Revolution, designers turned deliberately to the severe symmetry and classical vocabulary of ancient Rome and Greece. Chairs of this type were created for the palaces, ministries, and elegant residences of the new imperial elite, where they were meant to convey order, dignity, and timeless refinement.

When placed in a room, this armchair offers both comfort and quiet authority. The rich mahogany glows warmly, the gilt bronze mounts catch the light with subtle brilliance, and the teal leather seat provides a cool, luxurious contrast. Its clean silhouette and noble materials make it an ideal piece for any Neoclassical interior.

This is a beautiful and authentic example of Empire seat furniture, where technical precision meets classical elegance and understated luxury. Its refined proportions and high-quality execution make it a highly desirable addition to any serious collection of early 19th-century French decorative arts.
