Description

This exceptional and large-scale long case clock, with its signed brass dial and richly carved and ormolu-mounted mahogany case, is a testament to the artistry of Elie Perrineau of Pau. The movement is a true regulator, a type of clock renowned for its precision. Unlike standard clocks, regulator movements were designed with the singular purpose of keeping the most accurate time possible, often by separating the minute and hour hands on the dial. This focus on scientific accuracy, a hallmark of the Age of Enlightenment, is beautifully housed within a case that embodies the elegance and grace of the Louis XVI style.

The elegance of the Louis XVI style comes from a desire to return to the simplicity and grandeur of classical art. In the late 18th century, a newfound interest in antiquity led artists and architects to rediscover the beauty of classical Greek and Roman art. This period is characterized by strict symmetry, geometric shapes, straight lines, and motifs inspired by antiquity, such as columns, pilasters, fluting, and friezes. The fine ormolu mounts on this clock’s case are a superb example of this aesthetic, contrasting beautifully with the warm patina of the mahogany.

The clock is fitted with a sophisticated movement that rings once every 15 minutes, a feature known as a “quarter-hour strike.” This function provides a gentle and consistent cadence of time throughout the day, in addition to striking the full hour. The beautifully carved case shows a delicate scrolling design with an unusual and attractive bellied shape. The sides of the clock are decorated with carved fruit wood, and the base is adorned with a fine foliate ormolu mount. The hood is topped by a carved finial, adding to its grand presence.

The signed brass dial has Roman numerals and a lovely open-work pierced hand. The bezel is embellished with a fine ormolu wreath mount. The movement has a polished brass pendulum and weights. The clock is in full working condition and has been fully serviced.

This highly decorative and technically precise clock is an imposing and magnificent piece of furniture. It is in the style of the work of a very celebrated clockmaker and is a fine example of the craftsmanship and sophistication of the 19th century.
