Description

This magnificent 19th-century French mantel clock is a striking example of the period’s penchant for narrative sculpture and opulent materials. The piece serves as a sophisticated fusion of classical mythology and decorative arts, set atop a commanding rectangular base of vivid, highly figured green malachite.

The crowning element of the clock is a beautifully modeled patinated bronze figural group depicting a mythological scene-a mature, bearded male figure seated with a child in his arms. The bronze, rendered with exceptional detail in the musculature and flowing drapery, contrasts powerfully against the brilliant, mercury-gilded bronze (ormolu) housing the clock dial. The dial itself, composed of crisp white enamel with elegant Roman numerals, is signed by a notable maker and features delicate, pierced hands that underscore the clock’s high-quality horological pedigree.

The base is a masterwork of decorative layering, utilizing the rich, intense banding of the malachite to elevate the ornate ormolu mounts. The front of the plinth is adorned with a grand, central gilt-bronze frieze featuring symmetrical, scrolling acanthus motifs and a delicate central emblem, while the lower section is supported by a secondary malachite tier, trimmed with a continuous ormolu band of foliate filigree. The entire structure is raised on four elegant feet, providing both physical stability and a sense of visual grandeur that befits its status as a luxury mantel ornament.

From a technical perspective, the clock is in outstanding condition, having been meticulously serviced by a professional horologist specializing in museum-quality maintenance. It features a reliable eight-day movement that strikes the hour and half-hour on a resonant bell, ensuring that its auditory presence is as impressive as its aesthetic one. The clock is complete with its original pendulum, winding key, and bell, remaining fully functional and ready for display.

This ensemble represents the height of 19th-century French luxury, where the collaborative expertise of the sculptor, the bronzier, the lapidary, and the master clockmaker converged. It stands as both a precision instrument of timekeeping and a significant piece of sculptural art, designed to serve as the undisputed focal point of a distinguished interior.
