This superb pair of French gilt bronze and malachite guéridons (pedestal tables) is a magnificent example of the opulent revival style of the Napoleon III period, dating from around 1850–1870.
Each guéridon features a circular top veneered in rich green malachite with a delicate gilt bronze gallery around the edge. The stem is formed by four gracefully scrolling legs of gilt bronze, richly ornamented with acanthus leaves, rocaille motifs, and flowing scrolls in the Louis XV Rococo revival manner. The legs terminate in stylized lion-paw feet and rise from a stepped rectangular malachite base with gilt bronze borders and mouldings.
The upper part of the stem is adorned with large, expressive gilt bronze lion masks that serve both as decorative elements and structural supports, adding a bold and theatrical touch characteristic of mid-19th-century French taste.
These guéridons perfectly reflect the eclectic and luxurious spirit of the Second Empire. While drawing inspiration from the playful asymmetry and naturalistic forms of the Louis XV Rococo period, they are executed with the larger scale, richer gilding, and technical virtuosity typical of Napoleon III workshops. The combination of vivid green malachite with warm, luminous ormolu was especially prized by the French elite of the time, who appreciated both the exotic beauty of the stone and the exceptional craftsmanship of the bronze mounts.
When placed as a pair in a salon, boudoir, or gallery, they create a striking symmetrical yet lively presence. The scrolling legs and lion masks give the tables a sense of movement and vitality, while the malachite tops provide a cool, luxurious surface ideal for displaying candelabra, small clocks, or fine porcelain.
This pair represents the highest level of 19th-century French decorative arts revival, where the fantasy of the Rococo was reinterpreted with new technical mastery and lavish materials. Their sculptural quality, rich gilding, and imaginative design make them not only functional pieces but true works of art that bring light, movement, and sophistication to any interior.
