Description

The clock is dominated by a large, dynamic gilt bronze figure of a seated classical woman (likely a Muse or an allegory of Music or Poetry). She is shown in a graceful, flowing pose with one arm raised dramatically above her head, draped in richly modelled antique robes that cascade in naturalistic folds. The figure is positioned beside a celestial globe executed in deep blue malachite with delicate gilt bronze inlays forming the Roman numerals and constellations. The globe serves as the clock dial, with gilt hands indicating the time.

The entire sculptural group rests on a stepped rectangular base of gilt bronze, richly decorated with classical mouldings, acanthus leaves, and a central anthemion motif. The base terminates in small gilded feet, giving the clock a solid yet refined presence.

This clock perfectly captures the eclectic and opulent spirit of the Napoleon III era. After the more austere classicism of the First Empire, the Second Empire embraced greater fantasy, narrative content, and luxurious materials. The use of malachite combined with lavish ormolu was especially popular, and allegorical or mythological figures such as this Muse allowed bronziers to showcase both sculptural ambition and storytelling ability.

Mechanically, the clock houses a reliable eight-day going movement that strikes the hours and every half-hour on a clear bell. It has been professionally cleaned and serviced by a specialist in museum-quality timepieces and remains in excellent cosmetic and fully working condition. It comes complete with its original pendulum, winding key, and bell.

When displayed on a mantel, the clock creates a commanding yet refined focal point. The golden figure glows with warmth against the deep blue malachite globe, while the gentle tick of the movement and the soft chime on the half-hour add a living rhythm to the dramatic scene.

This is a beautiful and evocative example of mid-19th century French craftsmanship, where technical mastery, luxurious materials, and romantic narrative come together in perfect harmony. Its sculptural quality and striking colour combination make it a standout piece in any collection of Napoleon III decorative arts.
