Description

This rare and important pair of 19th-century Empire candlesticks is a superb example of the refined aesthetic and masterful craftsmanship that defined the period. These beautiful pieces are not merely functional objects but a harmonious blend of classical form and sophisticated materials, combining the rich depth of patinated bronze with the brilliant luster of gilt bronze (ormolu). Their design is highly reminiscent of the celebrated works of Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751-1843), the preeminent bronzier of the Empire period, who was renowned for his masterful use of contrasting gilding techniques and his exceptional attention to detail.

The design is a masterful study in Neoclassical elegance, with a focus on balanced proportions and classical motifs. The Empire style (1804–1815) was a powerful revival of ancient Roman and Greek art, characterized by its grandeur and use of symbols of power and victory. These candlesticks, with their disciplined forms and exquisite ornamentation, perfectly embody this aesthetic.

The base of each candlestick is adorned with a meticulously chased frieze of grapevines and baskets filled with flowers, motifs that symbolize abundance and prosperity. This decoration on the base is centered by a shiny gilded ring, a subtle detail that highlights the artisan’s technical virtuosity. The tapering stem of each candlestick rises from this base, its fluted column recalling classical architecture.

The upper portion of the candlestick is a celebration of finely detailed bronze work. The bobeches feature a detailed geometrical decoration, while the cups below them are shaped like a flower bud, with a shiny gilded base and matte gilded decorations of leaves on top. This top part rests on a decorative basket filled with fruit and leaves. The basket itself consists of two shiny gilded rings, between which are finely carved decorations of flowers and dots. The variety of decorations in both matte and shiny gilding creates a beautiful visual texture and depth.

These candlesticks were executed in mercury gilded bronze of a high manufacturing quality. The use of this difficult and costly process resulted in a lustrous, durable finish that has maintained its brilliance for over a century. This pair is in a very good condition, with all original gilding intact, making them a truly exceptional addition to any collection of Empire decorative arts.
