Description

This striking mantel clock captures the opulent and romantic spirit of French decorative arts during the Napoleon III period, when neoclassical forms were revived with a richer, more theatrical flair. The piece draws on historical themes while showcasing the era’s love for luxurious materials and finely detailed sculpture.

The composition is dominated by a dramatic gilded bronze figural group set upon a dark brown patinated brass platform. A male figure in Renaissance-style armor kneels in a gesture of respect and admiration, gently placing or removing a helmet from the head of a seated female figure who reclines in a queen-like posture. The modeling is exceptionally realistic, with expressive faces, carefully rendered drapery, and dynamic poses that bring the scene to life. This narrative grouping evokes chivalric or historical romance, a popular motif in mid-19th-century decorative arts.

Below, the substantial rectangular pedestal is veneered in vibrant malachite, its swirling green tones providing a vivid contrast to the warm gilt bronze. The contours are richly adorned with ormolu mounts featuring classical anthemia and acanthus leaves, while the two lower corners are formed as proud dragon heads with open mouths and raised necks, adding a bold sculptural presence and symbolic strength to the base. The entire structure rests on elegantly scrolled gilt-bronze feet that enhance the clock’s sense of grandeur.

The circular enamel dial is framed by an ornate gilt-bronze cartouche and displays Roman numerals for the hours with Arabic numerals for the minutes. The gilt-bronze hands, shaped with delicate leaf motifs, convey both elegance and nobility. Mechanically, the clock houses a reliable eight-day going movement that strikes the hours and every half-hour on a clear bell. It has been professionally cleaned and serviced by a watchmaker experienced in museum-quality timepieces, remaining in excellent cosmetic condition and perfect working order. The piece comes complete with its original pendulum, winding key, and bell.

Malachite was highly prized in the 19th century not only for its intense color and natural patterns but also for its association with luxury and exotic sourcing. Its use here, combined with lavish ormolu, reflects the Napoleon III taste for eclectic revivalism and opulent materials drawn from earlier French traditions.

When placed on a mantel, the warm glow of the gilded figures against the deep green malachite creates a commanding yet refined focal point. The gentle motion of the pendulum and the soft chime on the half-hour add a living rhythm that enhances the theatrical quality of the sculptural group. This clock is a fine example of Second Empire craftsmanship, where technical precision met a romantic celebration of history and grandeur. It would sit beautifully in a collector’s interior alongside other 19th-century French pieces.
