Description

This superb pair of French gilt bronze guéridons (side tables) is a magnificent example of the Louis XV Rococo revival style, dating from the Napoleon III period, circa 1850–1870. Executed with exceptional quality and imagination, these tables showcase the playful exuberance and technical virtuosity that characterized the finest Parisian bronziers of the Second Empire.

Each guéridon rises on four gracefully scrolling legs that terminate in stylized dolphin or sea-serpent heads, their bodies twisting and intertwining in dynamic, asymmetrical curves. The legs are richly ornamented with acanthus leaves, rocaille motifs, and flowing scrolls, all executed with crisp chasing and a deep, luminous gilding. Rising from this animated base, the slender stem supports a circular top framed by a delicate gilt bronze gallery. Crowning each table is a pair of elegantly posed female figures (often called “caryatids” in this context) with arms raised to support the marble or onyx top, their bodies forming part of the structural and decorative scheme.

The overall design draws heavily on the Louis XV Rococo tradition, with its love of asymmetry, movement, and naturalistic forms, yet it is executed with the refined precision and opulent scale typical of mid-19th-century revival pieces. The use of full gilt bronze throughout gives the pair a warm, golden glow and a sense of extraordinary luxury.

Such guéridons were highly fashionable in grand Parisian apartments and châteaux during the Second Empire. They were frequently placed in pairs in salons, boudoirs, or along gallery walls, where they served both as elegant surfaces for displaying candelabra, clocks, or porcelain, and as sculptural statements in their own right. The playful sea-creature motifs and the graceful female figures add a light, almost theatrical charm that perfectly suits the romantic and eclectic spirit of the Napoleon III era.

These tables demonstrate the highest level of French bronze craftsmanship of the period — from the complex lost-wax casting to the meticulous hand-chasing and mercury gilding. When placed together, they create a striking symmetrical yet lively presence, their scrolling legs and raised figures seeming almost to dance.

For a collector, this pair represents the pinnacle of 19th-century French decorative arts revival, where the fantasy of the Rococo was reinterpreted with new technical mastery and lavish materials. Their sculptural quality, rich gilding, and imaginative design make them not only functional pieces but true works of art that bring movement, light, and sophistication to any interior.
