Description

This beautiful French mantel clock is a fine and highly expressive example of the Napoleon III period, dating from around 1850–1870. It combines sculptural quality with luxurious materials in a romantic and allegorical composition that was very much in vogue during the Second Empire.

The clock is dominated by a finely modelled gilt bronze group depicting a seated maternal figure (likely representing Charity, Motherhood, or the Virgin with the Christ Child). She is shown tenderly embracing a child, her drapery flowing in soft, naturalistic folds. The modelling of the figures is sensitive and full of warmth, with the gilt bronze capturing light beautifully and giving the scene a luminous, almost golden presence.

The circular white enamel dial with Roman numerals is discreetly placed within the lower part of the composition, allowing the sculptural group to remain the undisputed focal point. The entire piece rests on a substantial rectangular plinth of rich green malachite, which provides a striking colour contrast to the warm gilt bronze. The malachite base is richly ornamented with elaborate gilt bronze mounts, including scrolling acanthus volutes, a central mascaron, and a finely chased lower frieze.

This clock perfectly reflects the romantic and historicist spirit of the Napoleon III era. While drawing on classical and religious themes, it presents them with the emotional warmth and opulent material richness characteristic of mid-19th-century French taste. Such figural clocks were highly prized in grand salons and bourgeois homes, where they served both as timekeepers and as decorative objects that conveyed sentiment, virtue, and cultural refinement.

Mechanically, the clock houses a reliable eight-day going movement that strikes the hours and every half-hour on a clear bell. It has been professionally cleaned and serviced by a specialist in museum-quality timepieces and remains in excellent cosmetic and fully working condition. It comes complete with its original pendulum, winding key, and bell.

When placed on a mantel, the clock creates a warm and graceful focal point. The golden figure of the mother and child glows against the deep green malachite base, while the gentle chime on the half-hour adds a soft, civilised rhythm to the room.

This is a charming and evocative example of Second Empire decorative arts, where technical precision meets sculptural elegance and luxurious materials. Its tender subject and fine execution make it a delightful addition to any collection of 19th-century French objets d’art.
