Description

This magnificent pair of 19th century French pedestals is a superb example of the opulent Neoclassical revival that flourished during the Napoleon III period. Executed with exceptional quality, they combine rich malachite with finely chased gilt bronze in a design that perfectly captures the architectural grandeur and luxurious taste of the Second Empire.

Each pedestal is conceived as a miniature architectural column. The central shaft consists of a solid column of deep green malachite, its natural swirling patterns beautifully displayed. This is flanked by two elegant, fluted gilt bronze columns of Corinthian order, their capitals richly carved with acanthus leaves and volutes in the purest classical tradition. The harmonious contrast between the cool, veined malachite and the warm, luminous ormolu creates a striking visual dialogue typical of the finest Parisian workshops of the era.

The bases and tops are also veneered in malachite, framed by gilt bronze mouldings and delicate foliate motifs. Small gilt bronze feet elevate the pedestals slightly, adding refinement and preventing direct contact with the surface on which they stand. The overall proportions are perfectly balanced, stately yet graceful, making them ideal for displaying important objects such as clocks, candelabra, bronzes or fine porcelain.

These pedestals reflect the Napoleon III enthusiasm for reviving and reinterpreting the grandeur of ancient Greece and Rome, while employing the most luxurious materials available. Malachite, sourced primarily from Russia and highly prized for its intense colour and rarity, was a favourite of the period’s elite, symbolising wealth and refined taste. Combined with masterful gilt bronze work, such pieces were commissioned for the grand salons, galleries and private apartments of the aristocracy and wealthy bourgeoisie.

When placed as a pair, they create a powerful symmetrical presence that instantly elevates any interior. Whether flanking a fireplace, framing a doorway or supporting a pair of candelabra or a fine Empire clock, they bring architectural dignity and luminous colour to a room. The play of light on the gilt bronze capitals and the deep green malachite shafts changes beautifully throughout the day, rewarding close appreciation.

For a collector these pedestals represent the highest level of 19th century French decorative arts, where technical mastery, classical scholarship and luxurious materials come together in perfect harmony. They are not only elegant supports but works of art in their own right, capable of transforming a space with their quiet yet commanding beauty.
