Description

This dramatic and finely executed mantel clock is a striking example of French decorative arts from the Napoleon III period, when sculptural ambition and romantic storytelling were brought together with exceptional technical skill.

The composition is dominated by a richly patinated bronze figural group featuring two winged figures seated upon a rocky outcrop. One holds a large scythe aloft, its curved blade catching the light, while the other figure appears in a contemplative or mournful pose. Together they create a powerful allegorical scene, most likely representing Father Time (Chronos) accompanied by an angel or winged genius, evoking themes of the passage of time, mortality, and the inevitable march of history. The modeling of the figures is expressive and dynamic, with flowing drapery, detailed wings, and carefully rendered anatomy that give the group a sense of movement and emotional intensity.

Below this sculptural tableau sits the clock itself, housed in an ornate gilt bronze case. The circular white enamel dial presents clear Roman numerals and delicate hands, framed by elaborate gilt mounts that include acanthus scrolls and classical foliage. The entire structure rests on a shaped base with a dark marble or onyx platform, enriched with further gilt bronze ornamentation along the lower edge, including a Greek key frieze that adds architectural discipline to the more theatrical upper section.

This clock perfectly captures the eclectic and romantic spirit of the Second Empire. While drawing on classical and allegorical subjects, it presents them with the dramatic flair and technical virtuosity typical of mid-19th-century Parisian workshops. Such figural clocks were highly prized in grand interiors, where they served not only as timepieces but as conversation pieces that invited reflection on time, destiny, and human existence.

Mechanically, the clock houses a solid eight-day movement that strikes the hours and every half-hour on a clear bell. It has been professionally cleaned and serviced by a watchmaker experienced in museum-quality timepieces and remains in excellent cosmetic condition with perfect working order. The piece comes complete with its original pendulum, winding key, and bell.

When placed on a mantel, the dark patinated bronze of the figures contrasts beautifully with the warm glow of the gilt bronze case and base, creating a rich and commanding presence. The raised scythe adds a vertical accent that draws the eye upward, while the gentle tick of the movement and the soft chime on the half-hour bring a quiet, measured rhythm to the dramatic scene.

For a collector, this clock is both a fine work of sculpture and a sophisticated timepiece. Its allegorical depth and high-quality execution make it a standout piece that embodies the romantic historicism so characteristic of Napoleon III taste. It pairs particularly well with other mid-19th-century objects that blend classical forms with narrative richness.
