Description

This magnificent and monumental pair of candelabra is a superb example of the refined aesthetic and masterful craftsmanship of the early 19th century, a period that saw a powerful revival of classical forms under the Charles X and Louis Philippe reigns. Crafted from finely chiseled and expertly cast gilt bronze, these pieces exude an air of timeless elegance and grandeur.

The design is a celebration of classical symmetry and decorative motifs, showcasing a masterful blend of curves and counter-curves. Each candelabrum rises from a substantial, hexagonal base of stunning malachite. This luxurious green copper carbonate mineral, known for its mesmerizing concentric patterns and vibrant color, was highly prized and used in the most prestigious commissions of the period. The malachite base is further embellished with finely chased gilt bronze mounts, featuring intricate motifs of acanthus leaves and decorative scrolls, and resting on elegant toupie feet.

The central stem, also of gilt bronze, is a study in Neoclassical artistry. It is adorned with finely detailed decorative elements, including scrolling foliage and classical moldings, culminating in a graceful, urn-shaped form. From this central stem, three elegant and beautifully proportioned candle arms curve outward, each terminating in a finely detailed candle cup and drip pan. The arms are masterfully sculpted, with their scrolling forms creating a harmonious and balanced composition that provides a generous display of light.

The combination of the warm, brilliant gold of the gilt bronze and the vibrant, richly veined green of the malachite creates a striking visual contrast. This pairing of a precious metal with a highly sought-after mineral was a hallmark of the period, reflecting a taste for luxurious materials and sophisticated design. The quality of the casting and the meticulous detail of the chasing are indicative of a top-tier Parisian or European workshop of the time.

These candelabra are not merely functional objects; they are exquisite works of art that would serve as a commanding statement piece in a grand salon, dining room, or study. They embody the opulence and artistry of the early 19th century, representing a high point in the history of European decorative arts.
