Description

This fine and true pair of 19th-century candelabra is a superb example of the luxurious and eclectic tastes of the Napoleon III period. These beautiful pieces are not merely objects of illumination; they are a profound fusion of sculpture, history, and decorative art, designed to evoke the grandeur of Neoclassical elegance. They are a testament to the period’s mastery of combining rich materials, a hallmark of the Second French Empire.

The design is a sophisticated and highly symbolic blend of classical motifs and symmetrical form. Each candelabrum is raised on a substantial, square plinth of stunning malachite, a luxurious and highly prized material known for its vibrant green color and mesmerizing patterns. The malachite base is further enhanced by finely chased gilt bronze mounts, featuring ornate floral wreaths and a central classical medallion.

The central sculptural element is a beautifully rendered classical maiden, or caryatid, cast in a deep, warm patinated bronze. Draped in a finely detailed tunic and holding a classical vessel, the figure’s posture conveys a sense of serene dignity as she bears the candelabrum structure. This use of a human figure as a structural support is a direct homage to ancient Greek and Roman art, a powerful stylistic choice that elevates the piece from a functional object to a work of high art.

From the maiden’s head rises the upper portion of the candelabrum, which is a tour de force of gilt bronze work. A central stem and four gracefully scrolling arms branch out, each terminating in a finely detailed candle cup. The arms are adorned with finely chased acanthus scrolls and other foliage, creating a balanced and harmonious display of five lights. The purposeful juxtaposition of the deep, warm patina of the bronze maiden against the brilliant, reflective gilt bronze of the arms and base creates a powerful visual dynamic, highlighting the sculptural details and adding a sense of opulent luxury.

This pair of candelabra is a commanding statement of sophisticated taste. Their masterful combination of rich materials, classical forms, and impeccable craftsmanship makes them a truly exceptional addition to any collection of antique lighting. They are not only functional objects but also exquisite works of art that would have originally graced a grand salon, a library, or a formal dining room, embodying the decorative spirit of the Napoleon III era.
