Description

This intricate French table is a stunning example of the Boulle revival style during the Napoleon III period, dating from circa 1850–1870.

The piece is designed primarily for display and showcases the opulent and historicist taste that defined the Second Empire. It is constructed on a foundation of ebonized wood, which provides a dramatic, deep black background that beautifully accentuates the rich Boulle marquetry. The marquetry itself is executed with great skill using intricately cut brass and red tortoiseshell, creating dense foliate scrolls, arabesques, and geometric patterns that cover the surfaces with remarkable precision and depth.

The table features a multi-tiered structure with a removable tray-like top, originally intended for displaying fruits, plates, or other decorative objects. It is lavishly embellished with finely cast and fire-gilt bronze (ormolu) mounts and trim, including scrolling brackets, decorative borders that frame each tier, and lion-head motifs on the feet that add a bold, sculptural accent.

This table perfectly reflects the eclectic and luxurious spirit of the Napoleon III era. The revival of André-Charles Boulle’s celebrated marquetry technique, originally developed for Louis XIV, became extremely fashionable in the mid-19th century. The prosperous bourgeoisie and aristocracy eagerly embraced these revival pieces as a way to display both cultural sophistication and material wealth, evoking the grandeur of the French royal past while meeting the demands of contemporary opulence.

The combination of deep black ebony, warm brass and tortoiseshell marquetry, and luminous gilt bronze mounts creates a rich, jewel-like effect that changes beautifully with the light. The quality of the inlay, the precision of the chasing, and the overall harmonious design mark this table as the work of a skilled Parisian atelier.

When placed in a grand salon or formal room, this table serves as both a functional display surface and a striking decorative statement. Its multi-tiered form, intricate marquetry, and lavish ormolu mounts embody the opulent historicism that defined the Napoleon III period.

This is a truly exceptional example of 19th-century French decorative arts, where technical mastery meets historical revival and luxurious ornamentation. Its quality and stylistic sophistication make it a highly desirable addition to any serious collection of Napoleon III furniture or Boulle revival pieces.
