Description

This magnificent mantel clock is a superb example of French horology and decorative art from the early to mid-19th century, reflecting the taste for romantic Classicism that followed the Empire period. It combines a finely modelled bronze figure, a richly decorated malachite base, and a precise timekeeping movement in one harmonious composition.

The clock is surmounted by a beautifully cast and patinated bronze figure, probably representing Diana the Huntress, shown seated with a bow in her hand and a hunting hound at her side. The composition is harmonious and balanced, the modelling refined, and the patina warm and even. Diana rests gracefully beside the clock case while her hound leaps upward, creating a lively and dynamic sculptural group that draws the eye and tells a quiet story of the hunt.

The movement is housed in a square gilt bronze case with a circular white enamel dial displaying Roman numerals and fitted with blued-steel hands. This central element sits elegantly within the larger composition. The base is veneered in vibrant malachite with its characteristic deep green veining and is embellished with a finely chased gilt-bronze frieze featuring classical motifs, including a central laurel wreath flanked by floral and foliate elements. The entire structure rests on four gilt-bronze feet, adding a final touch of refinement and elevation.

Mechanically, the clock houses an eight-day going movement that strikes the hours and half-hours on a bell. It has been professionally cleaned and serviced by a watchmaker experienced in museum-quality timepieces and remains in excellent cosmetic condition with perfect working order. The piece comes complete with its original pendulum, winding key, and bell.

This clock illustrates the transition from the strict Neoclassicism of the Empire period to the more decorative and romantic style of the Charles X and Louis-Philippe eras. The combination of patinated bronze sculpture with rich malachite veneer is characteristic of the period’s appreciation for noble materials and classical subjects drawn from mythology. Such pieces were prized in refined interiors where they served both as accurate timekeepers and as elegant works of art that evoked the ideals of antiquity in a warmer, more narrative manner.

When the movement is running, the gentle tick is accompanied by the soft chime on the half-hour, while the warm tones of the bronze and the vivid green of the malachite create a striking visual presence on any mantel. The lively interaction between Diana and her hound brings a sense of motion and life to the piece that makes it particularly engaging. This is a fine and evocative example of French craftsmanship from a period that valued both technical precision and romantic sensibility.
