Description

This is a refined and authentic Empire period mantel clock, signed on the dial “Alexandre à Paris.” The signature belongs to a master horologist active in the early 19th century, a time when the horological and decorative arts of Paris were celebrated throughout Europe. The Empire style (1804-1815), which defines this clock, was a direct expression of imperial grandeur under the reign of Napoléon I. It was a deliberate move away from the delicate curves of the preceding Louis XVI era and a full-throated homage to the monumental classical forms of ancient Rome and Greece.

This aesthetic is perfectly captured in the clock’s design, which emphasizes strict symmetry, monumental form, and refined ornamentation. The clock case takes on the elegant shape of a classical urn or shield, resting on a fluted pedestal and a square base, all made from beautifully chased and mercury-gilded bronze (ormolu). Mercury gilding was a costly and toxic process that produced a brilliant, enduring finish, a testament to the luxurious craftsmanship and investment in these pieces.

The white enamel dial, with its Roman numerals, is clear and legible. These clocks were not just timekeepers; they were works of art designed to project a sense of power, order, and refined taste, fitting perfectly into the grand interiors of the new imperial court and the homes of the era’s elite. The movement, a high-quality eight-day mechanism with a silk suspension, strikes the hours and half-hours on a bell, typical of fine Parisian clocks. The exceptional state of preservation and the recognized signature of Alexandre à Paris make this a highly desirable piece. It is a work of art that embodies the artistic and cultural ideals of Napoleonic France.
