This magnificent French mantel clock is a superb and highly refined example of the Empire style, dating from around 1810–1820. The modelling of the drapery, the serene expression, and the naturalistic rendering of the child and dog are executed with remarkable sensitivity and skill.

The circular white enamel dial with Roman numerals is integrated into the architectural base of the composition, framed by delicate gilt bronze laurel branches. To the right stands a small classical tripod altar with a burning flame, symbolising eternal love or the hearth.
