Description

This distinguished French desk is a fine and elegant example of 19th-century furniture from the Napoleon III period, dating from circa 1850–1870.

The piece masterfully blends elements of the Louis XVI and Empire styles, combining the refined rectilinear forms and classical symmetry of the late 18th century with the rich ornamentation and luxurious materials favoured during the Second Empire. The desk is constructed in ebonized wood with a deep, high-gloss French polish that provides a dramatic, mirror-like surface. It is generously embellished with finely cast and chased gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts of excellent quality.

The rectangular top is inset with a matte leather writing surface framed by a delicate ormolu border. The frieze contains two pull-out drawers and is adorned with intricate ormolu acanthus cartouches and gilded geometric lines. A prominent central ormolu mount in the form of a classical bust serves as the focal point on the front apron. The four tapered legs are decorated with gilt-bronze acanthus leaves and fluted details, terminating in elegant ormolu feet. A shaped, serpentine H-stretcher connects the legs and is enriched with an ornate central urn-like motif and acanthus leaf decoration.

This desk perfectly reflects the historicist and luxurious taste of the Napoleon III era. Following the political and social changes of the mid-19th century, French cabinetmakers revived and reinterpreted the elegant forms of the Louis XVI and First Empire periods, adapting them to contemporary standards of comfort and opulence. The use of ebonized wood, rich ormolu mounts, and classical motifs allowed the prosperous bourgeoisie and aristocracy to display both cultural refinement and material wealth.

When placed in a salon, study, or library, this desk functions as both a practical writing surface and a sophisticated decorative statement. The deep black ebonized finish, the warm glow of the gilt bronze mounts, and the clean classical proportions create a harmonious and dignified presence that is quintessentially 19th-century French.

This is a beautiful and authentic example of Napoleon III ébénisterie, where technical mastery meets historical revival and refined luxury. Its harmonious proportions, high-quality materials, and fine ormolu mounts make it a highly desirable addition to any serious collection of 19th-century French furniture.
