Description

This elegant French writing desk (bureau plat) is a magnificent example of the Boulle revival style during the Napoleon III period, dating from circa 1850–1870.

The piece masterfully fuses the graceful, curvilinear Louis XV form with the opulent and technically demanding Boulle marquetry technique revived from the Louis XIV era. Constructed in ebonized wood, the desk presents a dramatic dark ground that beautifully accentuates the rich brass and red tortoiseshell marquetry. The frieze, apron, and cabriole legs are densely inlaid with intricate scrolling arabesques, foliate patterns, and symmetrical strapwork, all executed with remarkable precision and depth.

The desk stands on four elegant cabriole legs, heavily embellished with finely cast and chased gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts. Sculptural female busts (espagnolettes) adorn the upper corners of the legs, while ornate ormolu trails follow the graceful curve of the legs and terminate in scrolled sabots. The front apron is centred by a prominent classical mask in gilt bronze, adding a strong focal point. The top features a central leather writing surface framed by a delicate ormolu gallery, making the desk both practical and highly decorative.

This desk perfectly reflects the eclectic and luxurious taste of the Second Empire. Under Napoleon III, France experienced a great revival of historical styles, and the re-interpretation of André-Charles Boulle’s celebrated marquetry technique became particularly fashionable. By combining the playful, curvilinear Louis XV silhouette with the grandeur of Boulle marquetry and lavish ormolu mounts, such pieces successfully evoked the elegance of the Ancien Régime while satisfying the demand for 19th-century luxury.

When placed in a salon, study, or boudoir, this desk served not only as a practical writing or card table but also as a striking decorative statement. The contrast between the deep black ebony, the warm glow of the brass and tortoiseshell marquetry, and the luminous gilt bronze mounts creates a rich, jewel-like effect that embodies the opulent historicism of the Napoleon III era.

This is a truly exceptional example of 19th-century French ébénisterie, where technical mastery, historical revival, and refined luxury are seamlessly integrated. Its quality of craftsmanship, harmonious proportions, and stylistic sophistication make it a highly desirable addition to any serious collection of Napoleon III decorative arts or Boulle revival furniture.
