Description

This elegant French commode is a fine and characteristic example of the Louis XV style as revived during the Napoleon III period, dating from circa 1850–1870.

Executed with excellent quality, the commode is veneered in richly figured mahogany with a beautiful warm tone and subtle grain. It features the classic bombé (curved) front and sides typical of the Louis XV rococo form. The front is divided into three rows of drawers (two small drawers over three long drawers), all fitted with elaborate gilt bronze handles and escutcheons in the rococo taste-scrolling acanthus, rocaille shells, and floral motifs.

The corners and feet are richly mounted with gilt bronze chutes and sabots featuring acanthus leaves and volutes. The apron is adorned with a prominent central gilt bronze mount with symmetrical scrolling foliage and a mascaron. The whole piece is crowned with a white marble top with a moulded edge, providing a cool, classical contrast to the warm mahogany and glowing ormolu.

This commode perfectly reflects the romantic revival spirit of the Second Empire. While inspired by the playful asymmetry and naturalistic forms of the Louis XV period, it is executed with the larger scale, deeper carving, and richer gilding characteristic of mid-19th-century French taste. The Napoleon III era saw a great demand for such “Louis XV revival” furniture among the new wealthy bourgeoisie and aristocracy who wished to display both historical elegance and contemporary luxury.

When placed in a salon, boudoir, or bedroom, this commode offers both practical storage and a strong decorative presence. The warm mahogany glows softly, the gilt bronze mounts catch the light with quiet brilliance, and the curved lines give the piece a graceful, feminine character.

This is a beautiful and authentic example of Napoleon III ébénisterie, where technical mastery meets historical revival and refined luxury. Its harmonious proportions, high-quality materials, and fine ormolu mounts make it a highly desirable addition to any serious collection of 19th-century French furniture.
