Description

This magnificent French Empire console table is a superb example of the highest quality Neoclassical furniture produced in Paris during the early 19th century, circa 1810–1820.

The table features a long, rectangular top with a black marble surface, framed by a finely chased gilt bronze gallery. The frieze is executed in black ebony or ebonized wood with rich brass and gilt bronze inlays in the classic Boulle-inspired technique. It is decorated with a central mascaron (lion mask) flanked by symmetrical scrolling foliage, palmettes, and classical trophies — all typical Empire motifs symbolising strength, victory, and eternal glory.

The most striking elements are the two front legs, designed as tall, tapering columns with fluted shafts and rich gilt bronze capitals and bases. Each leg is further adorned with vertical gilt bronze mounts featuring anthemion and acanthus patterns. The rear legs are simpler but maintain the same architectural elegance. The whole structure rests on gilt bronze feet shaped as lion paws, reinforcing the imperial character of the piece.

This console table perfectly embodies the spirit of the Empire under Napoleon Bonaparte. After the Revolution, French designers deliberately returned to the grandeur and order of ancient Rome and Greece. The use of black and gold, classical columns, lion masks, and laurel motifs was intended to express imperial power, permanence, and refined taste. Such monumental consoles were commissioned for the grand salons, galleries, and official residences of the Napoleonic elite, where they served as elegant surfaces for displaying clocks, candelabra, or fine porcelain while functioning as powerful architectural statements.

When placed against a wall, this table creates an immediate impression of dignity and opulence. The deep black ground contrasts dramatically with the warm gilt bronze mounts, while the classical proportions give it a timeless, monumental quality.

This console represents the pinnacle of French Empire furniture design, where technical mastery in bronze casting, marquetry, and stone work meets flawless classical proportion and symbolic refinement. Its exceptional quality and pure stylistic coherence make it a highly desirable addition to any serious collection of early 19th-century French decorative arts.
