Description

This magnificent pair of French Empire wall appliques (sconces) is a superb example of the highest quality ormolu work produced in Paris during the early 19th century, circa 1810–1820.

Each applique is designed in the pure Neoclassical taste of the Empire period. The central element is a large oval plaque of deep blue lapis lazuli, inlaid with small gilt bronze stars-a motif directly referencing the imperial flag and the night sky. This plaque is framed by an elaborate gilt bronze cartouche with scrolling acanthus and palmette motifs.

Above the plaque, two winged putti (cherubs) support a graceful five-light candelabrum branch with scrolling arms. Each arm terminates in a white opaline or frosted glass globe, designed to diffuse candlelight softly and elegantly. The lower part of the applique features a finely chased gilt bronze pendant with acanthus leaves and a central fleur-de-lis motif.

The overall composition is perfectly balanced, combining sculptural quality with architectural clarity. The warm, luminous gilt bronze contrasts dramatically with the deep blue lapis lazuli and the soft white of the glass globes, creating a rich and harmonious visual effect.

These appliques perfectly embody the spirit of the Empire under Napoleon Bonaparte. After the Revolution, French designers deliberately returned to the grandeur of ancient Rome and Greece, using classical motifs, noble materials such as lapis lazuli, and luminous ormolu to express imperial power, order, and refined taste. Such wall lights were commissioned for the grand salons, ballrooms, and official residences of the Napoleonic elite, where they provided both practical illumination and powerful decorative statements.

When mounted on a wall as a pair, these appliques create a striking symmetrical effect. The blue lapis lazuli plaques glow with intensity, the gilt bronze putti and branches catch the light with quiet brilliance, and the opaline globes diffuse a soft, flattering candlelight.

This pair represents the pinnacle of French Empire decorative arts, where technical mastery in bronze casting and gilding meets flawless classical design and symbolic refinement. Their exceptional quality and pure stylistic coherence make them a highly desirable addition to any serious collection of early 19th-century French objets d’art.
