This magnificent pair of French Empire wall appliques (sconces) is a superb example of the highest quality ormolu work produced in Paris during the early 19th century, circa 1810–1820.

Each applique is designed in the pure Neoclassical taste of the Empire period. The central element is a large oval plaque of deep blue lapis lazuli, inlaid with small gilt bronze stars-a motif directly referencing the imperial flag and the night sky.
