Description

his exceptional pair of French Empire console tables is a masterpiece of early 19th-century Parisian craftsmanship, dating from circa 1810–1820. Executed with the highest level of refinement, these tables perfectly embody the pure Neoclassical spirit of the Napoleonic era.

Each console features a rectangular top and body veneered in rich green malachite, framed by wide gilt bronze borders. The frieze is divided into elegant panels alternating between black marble or ebonized wood and malachite, each containing finely chased gilt bronze figures of classical deities and muses in antique style. These delicate figurative plaques are separated by repeating anthemion and palmette motifs, creating a rhythmic and harmonious composition.

The tables are supported by four impressive malachite columns with gilt bronze Corinthian capitals and bases. A beautifully pierced and chased gilt bronze stretcher connects the columns at the lower level, adding both structural strength and decorative elegance. The whole structure rests on finely modelled gilt bronze feet.

This pair represents the pinnacle of Empire decorative arts. After the Revolution, French designers deliberately returned to the grandeur and order of ancient Rome and Greece. The use of noble materials such as malachite (often imported from Russian mines) combined with luminous ormolu allowed artisans to express imperial power, permanence, and refined taste. Such monumental consoles were commissioned for the grand salons, galleries, and official residences of the Napoleonic elite, where they served as important surfaces for displaying clocks, candelabra, or fine porcelain while functioning as architectural statements in their own right.

When placed together, these consoles create a powerful symmetrical presence. The deep green malachite glows with intensity against the warm gilt bronze mounts, while the classical figures in the frieze add narrative depth and cultural sophistication. The play of light across the chased ormolu and the rich veining of the malachite rewards close appreciation from every angle.

This pair stands as a testament to the technical mastery and classical purity of the Empire period. Their exceptional quality, harmonious proportions, and flawless execution make them a highly desirable addition to any serious collection of early 19th-century French decorative arts.
