This magnificent French gilt bronze table is a superb example of the Louis XV Rococo revival style, created during the Napoleon III period, circa 1850–1870.
The table features a rectangular top with a central oval panel of rich green malachite, surrounded by four rectangular panels of deep blue lapis lazuli. The entire top is framed by an exceptionally intricate and densely chased gilt bronze gallery, adorned with scrolling acanthus leaves, flowers, and delicate rocaille motifs. The quality of the chasing is outstanding, showing the hand of a master bronzier.
The body is designed with graceful, asymmetrical cabriole legs that curve outward in typical Rococo fashion. The legs are richly ornamented with acanthus leaves, rocaille shells, and flowing scrolls, all executed with great fluidity and depth. A beautifully pierced and chased X-shaped stretcher connects the legs at the lower level, centred by an elaborate finial with further rococo ornament. The apron features a central mascaron flanked by scrolling acanthus, adding both movement and classical dignity to the composition.
This table perfectly captures the romantic revival spirit of the Napoleon III era. While inspired by the playful asymmetry and naturalistic forms of the Louis XV Rococo period, it is executed with the larger scale, deeper gilding, and technical virtuosity characteristic of mid-19th-century French taste. The combination of vivid green malachite and deep blue lapis lazuli with the warm, luminous ormolu creates a rich and luxurious effect that was highly prized by the French elite of the time.
When placed in a salon, boudoir, or gallery, this table becomes a true centrepiece. Its scrolling legs and intricate gallery give it a sense of movement and vitality, while the colourful stone top allows light to play beautifully across the surface. It is ideal for displaying small objets d’art, candelabra, or a fine clock.
This piece represents the highest level of 19th-century French decorative arts revival, where the fantasy of the Rococo was reinterpreted with new technical mastery and lavish materials. Its sculptural quality, rich gilding, and imaginative design make it not only a functional table but a true work of art that brings light, movement, and sophistication to any interior.
