Description

This elegant French writing desk (bureau plat) is a magnificent example of the Louis XV Rococo revival style during the Napoleon III period, dating from circa 1850–1870.

The desk is crafted from richly figured kingwood (or a similar precious wood) arranged in a fine parquetry pattern that highlights the natural beauty of the veneer. It displays the classic bombé (curved) form with a serpentine front and sides, resting on four graceful cabriole legs — all hallmarks of the Louis XV style. The top features a central leather writing surface framed by a delicate gilt bronze gallery.

The piece is heavily embellished with finely cast and chased gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts of the highest quality. The frieze contains three drawers, each fitted with elegant rococo-style handles and keyhole escutcheons. The lower apron is dominated by a prominent central ormolu mount in the form of a classical mask surrounded by intricate scrolling acanthus and C-scrolls. The cabriole legs are adorned with ornate ormolu trails that follow their elegant curve and terminate in richly decorated foliate sabots.

This desk perfectly reflects the romantic revival spirit of the Second Empire. Under Napoleon III, France experienced a great resurgence of interest in the decorative arts of the Ancien Régime. The revival of the Louis XV style, with its fluid lines, naturalistic ornament, and opulent rococo detailing, became particularly fashionable among the prosperous bourgeoisie and aristocracy. By combining the graceful curvilinear form of the mid-18th century with the technical excellence and lavish gilding of the 19th century, such pieces successfully evoked the elegance of the Louis XV court while meeting the demands of contemporary luxury.

When placed in a salon, study, or boudoir, this desk served not only as a practical writing table but also as a striking decorative statement. The warm glow of the kingwood, the shimmering gilt bronze mounts, and the delicate rococo ornamentation create a rich and harmonious effect that embodies the luxurious historicism of the Napoleon III era.

This is a truly exceptional example of 19th-century French ébénisterie, where technical mastery meets historical revival and refined luxury. Its harmonious proportions, high-quality materials, fine marquetry, and superb ormolu mounts make it a highly desirable addition to any serious collection of Napoleon III decorative arts or Louis XV revival furniture.
