This elegant and rare French secretary desk (secrétaire à abattant) is a magnificent example of the Boulle revival style during the Napoleon III period, dating from circa 1850–1870.

The piece masterfully combines the graceful, curvilinear Louis XV form with the opulent and technically demanding Boulle marquetry technique revived from the Louis XIV era. Constructed in ebonized wood, the desk presents a dramatic dark ground that beautifully accentuates the rich brass and red tortoiseshell marquetry. The sloping hinged top (abattant) opens to reveal a leather-lined writing surface and internal compartments, while the frieze, sides, and legs are densely inlaid with intricate scrolling arabesques, foliate patterns, and symmetrical strapwork, all executed with remarkable precision and depth.

The desk stands on four elegant cabriole legs, heavily embellished with finely cast and chased gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts. Sculptural female busts (espagnolettes) adorn the upper corners of the legs, while ornate ormolu trails follow the graceful curve of the legs and terminate in scrolled sabots. The front apron is centred by a prominent classical mask in gilt bronze, adding a strong focal point.

Under Napoleon III, France experienced a great revival of historical styles, and the re-interpretation of André-Charles Boulle’s celebrated marquetry technique became particularly fashionable.
